ORBFALL

HOW TO PLAY

Your first evening, in five steps. The town is safe; the world is not, and it gets dark in ten minutes.

The town is safe. The world is not, and it gets dark in ten minutes. Here is everything you need for your first evening, and nothing you do not.

1. Talk to somebody with a ! over their head

Mayor Elda stands by the east hall. Press E beside anyone with a golden ! and you have a quest; the quest board in the square has bounties on it as well. Quests are how you get your first coins, and coins are how you stop fighting with a rusty sword.

HOME TOWN. The fountain in the middle is where the Orbfall lands.

2. Light a star before dark

The stone stars out in the wilds do two things: they save your progress, and their light is safe ground that nothing hostile will walk into. Night lasts ten minutes. A lit star is where you wait it out, or where you fight from the edge of.

NIGHT. Your light is what you can see by, and everything that walks is out in it.

3. Spend your points

Every level is five points. C opens your stats and 16 spend them.

StatWhat it does
StrengthMelee damage, +2% a point
AgilityDodge chance, and a shorter wait on your roll
VitalityMaximum health, +5 a point
DexterityMovement speed
HealthHow fast you regenerate
CriticalCritical hits. Everybody starts at 5%; every point is another half a percent

4. Wear what you find

I opens your bag. Click a piece of gear to put it on; the belt across the top is food and potions, eaten with 1 and 2. The x in the corner of a bag square drops that item on the ground.

The shop sells you the next thing up. Smith Cinder's forge makes the thing you already have better, up to +10. Sell whatever you have outgrown at any counter with TAB.

5. Then the temples, and everything guarding them

One keeper in each of the five zones with an orb behind it, and five pedestals up the town ladder. After that: the raid caves (one per zone, ringed in boulders, and the thing at the bottom scales with the party that walks in), Skull Isle by ferry, and the three guarded landmarks — Frostpeak Summit, the Caldera and the Lost Oasis.

Everything you have ever done

Z is Deeds: thirty-five achievements and seven item sets, each paying coins and XP the moment you finish it. X is the collection log — everything you have ever held, killed or found.

Playing with other people

Three ways, and they are different roads:

  • The always-on world. A world on a machine of its own, up whether anybody is watching or not. Nothing to host and nobody to wait for — open Worlds and walk in. An orb falls on the town fountain there at eight every evening.
  • Host your own. Your browser tab becomes the world and you get a link to send. Keep the tab open — it is the world.
  • Same wifi. npm run host on one computer runs a world for the whole house with no internet at all.

Every world keeps its own characters. Walk into somebody's world for the first time and you are level 1 there, however far along you are at home. Come back next week and your hero is standing where you left it. The hero on your own machine is never taken along and never written over.
